About

Tonight is a special concert celebrating the music and legacy of legendary jazz pianist/ composer John Lewis and featuring one of New Mexico's favorite and most highly accomplished jazz ensembles, The Tribute Trio. The Tribute Trio, featuring John Rangel, piano; Michael Glynn, bass; and Cal Haines, drums, was formed in 2010 to honor the powerful influence of jazz pianists and composers whose music helped shape the evolution of jazz. The trio launched a year-long series of monthly concerts, each paying tribute to a different piano legend including Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson and 9 more. The addition of John Lewis to the list of pianist/composers to whom they pay tribute is a natural next step. The Tribute Trio has released 2 award winning CDs with a third due out this year. For this concert, the group will add Santa Fe based vibraphonist, Sam Lunt who is Director of the Santa Fe Marimba Festival and has released two solo marimba CDs. Joe Banks & the Brothers Divine, whose roots are in the South Broadway neighborhood, will open the evening with a rousing set of soul and gospel music. John Lewis is best known as one of the founders of the Modern Jazz Quartet (along with vibraphonist, Milt Jackson), a group that became one of the most influential and prominent jazz bands of the post-WWII era. John Lewis (1920-2001) was born in Illinois but raised in New Mexico where he attended the University of New Mexico. In 2001, Albuquerque City Council named the South Broadway Cultural Center auditorium in his name. The dedication was followed by a symposium organized by JazZ Inn owners Sophia Polakowski & Nicholas Peron, in conjunction with Outpost and the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, and featured performances by Andy Bey, Art Davis, Doug Lawrence, and more. With this concert we introduce what will hopefully become an annual event honoring one of Albuquerque's most revered and legendary musicians. ...
